Adenoid removal is called adenoidectomy. Adenoid is a lymphoid tissue in the nasopharynx (pharyngeal tonsils) that cannot be seen in a simple throat examination. The enlargement of adenoids is most frequent in children aged 2 to 10 years. The enlarged adenoids prevent air movement in the nose and the main symptom is respiratory distress. A night-time oxygen deficiency or frequent runny nose may often occur.
Enlarged adenoids may be caused by a weakened immune system, late detection of the problem, and delayed treatment. Adenoids can cause a number of health problems, such as otitis media or fluid in the ear.
When should you consider adenoid removal?
- continuous breathing through the mouth
- adenoid-induced snoring
- frequent ear infections
- nasal voice
The operation in Christinas Clinic:
Adenoidectomy is performed under general anaesthesia as an ambulatory operation; hence, it is not needed to stay in the clinic overnight. In case of a child patient the adenoids are removed by mouth. We offer parents the opportunity to stay in the same ward as their child/children.
The treatment and diagnosis of ear-, nose- and throat diseases is performed by ENT surgeon Dr. Vidmantas Pranevicius.
